This Oldsmobile ad was created in 1955, and is one of a handful of automobile ads from this time showing a woman in the driver's seat. The overall message: "It's youthful, gay, carefree - and styled to look the part," goes to show that marketers assumed that women were interested in appearance more than anything else. Nowadays, people are opening their eyes to the fact that it's not that simple. Women like to see ALL of the facts before making a purchasing decision. Simply emphasizing aesthetic characteristics is not enough. The most successful car salespeople pay attention to women rather than ignore them, since women buy more than 60% of new cars and influence 80% of all car sales.
