Derek Yaniger – Beatniks, Tiki Bars and Vegas glamour!
Sometimes you meet someone – and you dig ‘em the most, to say the least. That’s how us chicks and chucks at Hothead Studios feel about Derek Yaniger. A True Blue Friend of Hothead, Illustrator Extraordinaire, and Mister Retro (not to mention a few other unprintable monikers!)
Way back in the long ago, Mister Retro himself designed some groovadocious illustrations for our old Hothead Studios website! And let me tell ya, you doggie daddies and real gone cool kitties, it was the cat’s meow.
And us Hotheads, we returned the favor by setting up Derek with his own retro-cool website that shows off his crazy paint splats, tiki mug madness and sketch scratchin’s. Check out his art stylin’s at http://www.derekart.com
More About…Derek:
Our buddy Derek is a self-proclaimed hillbilly wonder boy. Born in the backwoods of Arkansas, Derek still resides in the south, in Atlanta, Georgia. When he’s not runnin’ shine, he’s crankin’ out purty pitchers for such high-falootin’ clients as Marvel Comics and Cartoon Network.
Derek’s illustration style, reminiscent of cocktail napkin art of the 50’s, can be seen in such magazines as Atomic, Barracuda and Car Kulture Deluxe, as well as on the walls of lowbrow art fans internationally.
Now our main Daddy-O is about to hit the big time with his new book – a way nice collection of his best bits. It should be rollin’ off the presses sometime around fall of ’08. Read the review, you hepcat hipsters! And buy his book, so that Mister Retro never again has to work for “the Man!”
Wildsville: The Art of Derek Yaniger (Masters of Lowbrow)
Celebrating a retro subculture of tiki gods, hillbillies, and burlesque, this collection of Derek Yaniger’s incredible body of 1950s-style cartoon art is a must for original cartoon art collectors, students of cartoon art, and fans of lowbrow artists will all find this an essential reference. The only work devoted to his illustrations for Cartoon Network, Marvel Comics (for which he worked on such titles as Hellraiser, Transformers: Generation 2, and Web of Spider-Man), and more, this book contains more than 150 original paintings and illustrations.
